Environment Troubleshooting: Orange Peel

Cause
  • Air pressure too high
  • Coating material not thinned out sufficiently/ Incorrect viscosity (insufficient solvent)
  • Not depositing a wet coat
  • Application technique: Gun stroked to rapidly (dusting the paint)
  • Insufficient air pressure, air pressure too low
  • Wrong air cap or fluid tip
  • Stroking too far from surface
  • Overspray striking a previously sprayed surface
  •  Incorrect gun set-up (poor atomization)
  •  Insufficient flow of primer system
  • Temperature too high
  • Incorrect selection of solvent

Prevention

  • Adjust air pressure
  • Add the correct amount of solvent by measure or determine by viscosity test (if applicable)
  • Check solvent use, correct speed and overlap of stroke
  • Avoid whipping. Take deliberate, slow strokes
  • Increase air pressure or reduce fluid pressure, see technical data sheet
  • Maintain 15-25 cm (conventional) or 35 –45 cm (airless) distance to surface
  • Spray detail parts first

Remedies

  • Slight orange peel effect can be removed by polishing. If more serious, the surface must be sanded and re-sprayed.
